One day you're on top of the world, screwing a bunch of housewives, about to go public... when suddenly... lulz

AshleyMadison Hack Threatens Millions of Would-Be Adulterers - Bloomberg Business

Adultery website AshleyMadison.com has been hacked, potentially exposing names, addresses, and sexual preferences of millions of would-be cheaters just as the site’s owner was preparing to go public.

Avid Life Media Inc., the Toronto company that runs the site with the tagline “Life is short, Have an affair,” said Monday that hackers had gained access to its systems and that it was working with police to investigate the breach.

A group or individual called The Impact Team has claimed responsibility for the attack, and has already leaked maps of company servers, staff information, and company bank accounts, according to cyber-security blog Krebs on Security. In a message overlaid on the AshleyMadison homepage, the hackers threatened to publish the stolen information unless the site and its peer EstablishedMen.com are taken offline.

White knights on steroids.

I wonder if the hacker group thinks shutting down Ashley Madison is going to stop cheating altogether. Once the floodgate has been open that people are looking for sites like this, it's difficult to "stop" it, but overall cheating is still going to happen with a website or without. And someone else is definitey going to come up with another solution. Shit I might be working on it right now...

Wich competitor bussiness do you think is paying for Impact Team dedication?
I`ll say... hmmmm!

M***h dot com?
T****r?

None because these other dating sites you censored for no god damned reason are in different sub niches and the risk of getting a federal indictment + conviction just isn't worth the potential reward

Also fuck off. Enjoy your neg rep.

The company valued itself at about $2 Billion.

Overnight, they went from $2 Billion to an IPO that no one will touch.

Seems pretty amatuerish to me.

A decent hacking group would be able to sell this database for 5-6 figures easily to spammers who would then rip out all the emails and inbox them with porn/dating/adult urls and ads. I remember 5-6 years ago hacked db dumps of Match.com/AFF and etc. misc. large adult customer databases would easily sell for 10k+ to mailers and it would only be a few million records.

This is some white knight level bullshit. Looking to just harm innocent users by dumping their full data.

If Jeff cheats on Amy with Sarah, that is in between them 3, not us and the entire internet (If Jeff = famous celebrity or politician does that make it more interesting? eh, a bit).

If they really want to hurt the company they need to leak all the internal comms in between staff and meeting PDFs/reports. The only purpose leaking the user info is to destroy AM's credibility and make them lose their userbase/recurring $.

If people want to cheat, they can use all the "regular" dating sites (and do), Facebook, apps like Tinder, etc.

Chances are, no one will ask if you are married/in a relationship or volunteer that information if they want a "date." Probably 1/2 the married people I know hide their relationship status on FB, post pics without spouses, etc. Not to mention off-line opportunities- bars, grocery stores, schools, every workplace, kids' sports practices, PTA meetings, etc. Anyone who wants to cheat can/will. The only practical difference with Ashley Madison is users admitting they are cheaters and being open with one of the other parties involved. I wonder how many of those millions of users are even real.

An ex-employee (or PR move) by Avid Life Media was doing an AMA on Reddit yesterday. They said the hack was most likely disgruntled group of people (religious). I agree now, I don't think it was a competitor or anything because this would be shooting themselves in the foot because as a result people are more scared to put personal information on porn sites.

In the adult/porn community business strategies such as hacking or promoting your content for free is just another playing card, we saw this with Manwin (now Mindgeek) buying Digital Playground. Strangely all of Digital Playground's content started appearing on Mindgeek's network free before they were bought out, shrinking their selling price as value dropped. After the buyout of course all the copyrighted videos were removed and value shot back up.

Ashley Madison is to online cheating websites as Nike is to sneakers. If these hackers were intelligent they would've had their own cheating site ready and waiting to pop up once subscribers fled AM en masse. Obviously they couldn't be linked to the other cheating site publically, but shit, this is a sure fire way to bust down a brand in a seemingly brand strong industry.
