Servers: The Inside-Outs

Servers: The Inside-Outs
By Italia
Version 2 -- Hopefully this one makes sense!
THIS ARTICLE WAS MADE INTENTIONALLY WITH NEWBIES IN MIND. I HAVE PUT TIME AND EFFORT INTO THIS AND WILL APPRICIATE IF IT ISN'T BASHED.

CONTENTS:
  • What is a Server?
  • Types of Servers
  • HTTP Servers
  • Looking for a Server
  • Server Software
  • Links & Miscellaneous
WHAT IS A SERVER?:
Dictionary.com defines it as:
"A computer that processes requests for HTML and other documents that are components of webpages."

Note: This is a brief example of what a server is in context to the internet and webpages, this definition does not apply as a global definition of server, so please take this into account! It makes sense to use a definition which has contextual relation to what this forum is about!

TYPES OF SERVERS?:
The most well known are:
  • Dedicated Server
  • File Server
  • FTP Server
  • Game Server
  • IM Server
  • IRC Server
  • Media Server
  • Proxy Server
  • P2P Server
  • Web Server (What we are focusing on.)
HTTP Servers:
Once again noting, we are only going to focus on this because it is in context to this forum.

HTTP Servers allow you to host (or store) all the type of files, such as text, image, or executable programs, that you want. Users will then be able to access these files as they wish.

Looking for a Server:
There are two main options you have when looking for a server, with them are some advantages and disadvantages of them:
  • Buying a Server
    • More expensive (DISADV)
    • More knowledge required (DISADV)
    • More freedom (ADV)
    • Works from home, reliable (ADV)
  • Renting a Server from a Host
    • Cheaper {Most of the time!} (ADV)
    • Newbie Friendly! (ADV)
    • Reliability tends to differ between hosts (DIS)
Please feel free to add!

SERVER SOFTWARE:
Note: WEB BASED ITEMS. ANYTHING IN CONTEXT TO THE INTERNET.
  • ADMINISTRATIVE
    • cPanel
    • Plesk
    • Webmin
    • Cube Panel
  • GENERAL
    • Apache HTTP Server
    • Microsoft IIS
    • Sun Microsystems Java
    • Netscape Enterprise Server
    • Zeus Web Server

I think you need to learn the difference between server hardware and http server software before continuing, because you've really muddled the two.

In your different 'plans', should the figures be 'Space' or 'bandwidth'.
5 GB space seems like quite a lot for a personal site.

Okay, let me clarify a few things:

(A) Not everybody knows these things!
(B) Those plan guidelines are based loosely on hosting websites, so there is a general pattern of what to look for.
(C) Ugh..I don't know what server hardware is? What did I say what was wrong? ...

Thanks for the feedback though. Got points? :p

WHY DO I NEED A HTTP SERVER?
HTTP Servers allow you to host (or store) all the type of files, such as text, image, or executable programs, that you want. Users will then be able to access these files as they wish.

You have hosting on a physical server confused with an http server which is software like apache, boa, thttpd, or another variation.

Ah, I see. Thanks for clarifying that, I'll fix that. Stupid mistake on my behalf, that's what happens when you write articles at 1AM :'(

Cheers,
ITALIA

How are you going to fix it, are you going to delete your whole article?

Man I feel bad constantly giving you a hard time but you might want to fix the wording here...
