Are Google & Yahoo's Demographic Targetting Accurate?

How can they possibly know the age of everyone? I see in the options you can target by age. Now I know they could do this easily with users who sign up by looking at their profile information, and from reading various posts I just found by Googling I see that they pull information from sites when they are registering, like myspace and friendster.

Basically what I want to ask is when using the Search network, how accurate is the demographic targeting? Have you noticed it limiting your impressions very much? Does anyone have a generic figure of how many % of searches actually have simple demographic data tied to them? I would think it can't be more than 40%, the reason being is I know plenty of people who don't use all those social networking sites where they would gather your age, gender, etc. Although, they could have an algorithm that determines what type of searches you are performing and matching them to a certain type of demo, although I would think this would not be very accurate is it involves a certain level of subjectivity.

Any thoughts on the system would be greatly appreciated as I have googled a bunch of shit and can't get anything conclusive from someone who actively uses it, so if someone who does could step in you'd probably save me a little time/money. Thanks in advance

This is simple. Anybody who is logged into an account at Google or Yahoo will get served your ad based on the demographics information you defined. Once a user logs into one of their accounts and closes out without signing out they should still have an open session.

It's really hard to answer your questions since theres going to be a considerable difference between each demographic. If you're targeting a demo that obviously doesn't have as many people as the other online you will get less impressions.

Demographic targeting is extremely accurate unless the user put in invalid information while signing up for their account.

The best thing you can do is test and see what works for you.

Good luck bro.
