we all know that Google maps live traffic feature basically pings people's smart phones to determine how fast they're driving and it's ridiculously accurate. (info: How Does Google's Predictive Traffic Maps Work?)

but is there a way to develop an app that uses the same concept to show us live human traffic on the streets/parks and public areas? Uses of such an app could be:

  • check in real time if there's a line up at a bar/club/theater/event before showing up
  • check in real time if there are too many people at the park you want to take your kids to.

..........

So even scanning the number of wireless devices in an area requires something to physically be there......everywhere...

Someday when real-time satellite feeds cover everywhere you could build a program that could figure out approx how many people are in an area, but not right now or at least not available to the public...

If you had an app installed on everyone's phone you could keep track of their GPS coordinates and shit but not on anonymous people from a remote location.
