A lawyer representing an android/ios app dev company wants to buy my domain name and use it as the title for a new game they are developing.

He said they don't have much money right now, but he is willing to offer me $250 up front for the domain name and $2k later, once the app is up and running on the app stores.

I initially agreed, but after doing some research and processing the phone call I'm having second thoughts. I found out that the lawyer representing them is also an executive at another game company, and I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be representing them if he wasn't confident they would be successful.

I'm thinking this domain is worth much more than $2,250, but I'm worried that they will get pissed that I changed my mind (I haven't signed anything yet). Then again, I don't think they would have contacted me in the first place unless they really wanted it.

What should I do?

I would be a bit leery of any app development company that wouldn't cough up 2250.00 on the front end.

Do your due diligence on them to see if they have EVER been successful with a product.

Call their competitor and see if they are interested. Then let the original buyer know they are now in an auction, with PREPAID terms.

Don't be such a dick... I am sure your doman name is not even a premium one... What is it worth to you or someone who won't develop an App? How much would you get if you sold it on SEDO today.

Take that amount as upfront, and then the 2500 or whatever.
If the app fails, you can always get the domain back.

Say 1.5 k plus royalty . Anything which looks half decent sells on the app store/market these days

Anything you don't get prepaid, assume you'll never get. When they don't pay you, what are you going to do, hire a lawyer to sue them for $2k? WTF company has money to pay a lawyer but not buy a domain name? Gimmie a break. They are trying to make you believe it isn't worth anything and/or they can't pay. Start at 10-20K, prepaid, and go down from there.

yeah bro go through with the sale, you dont wanna hurt some random lawyer from a random company's feelings now do ya?

Wtf. Yeah because thats how businesses work.

What it's worth doesn't mean anything. What someone is willing to pay for it on the other hand is an extremely different story.

Get at least 2000 and get it upfront. Escrow.com is a good way to do this so everyone feels good about it.

Good luck keeping track of royalties (if they even agreed to that, highly unlikely).

Rather than burning bridges, respond with what could be a legitimate reason for asking a higher premium if you want to take that route - "I just received another inquiry and they're offering $X,XXX." Careful though, they might just walk away completely and decide to use another extension. An app's domain has little to do with its success.

Agreed with the rest on payment terms, take the cash upfront.

Yes you can lease a domain. I would use a 3rd party to ensure that the domain is not suddenly pulled.
