I had no idea how incredibly simple it is to sign up on AWS, launch an instance, install apache and whatever else you want, get an elastic ip, setup route 53, and bam you're off to the races. Plus it's free for your first year.

What's the catch here? Why use standard hosting anymore?

EC2 is not good value from a price per performance unit POV. It makes business sense in some cases though.

My favorite hosts:
Linode (VPS, rock solid, get linux get paid)
Hetzner (59 euro for 32 gb ram? Hello!)

Comparing a raw machine to web hosting, do you want to be managing your LAMP or whatever stack? Depends, but a lot of the time no if it's an SEO site etc.

Love the ec2 setup but it is a lot more expensive than setting up someplace else. Unless you need quick launch instances for failover, and a loadblancer, I'd probably look elsewhere.

I see. The price/performance ratio appears to be pretty poor, while the main advantage is the ability to quickly scale and manage your infrastructure from a simple browser interface.
