It's javascript that publishers add to their sites, similiar to analytics tracking.
And if I remember correctly they somehow estimate traffic from sites that don't run their tracking as well but (supposedly) skew it in unfavorable terms as a way to scare big publishers into adding the their tracking code. Kind of a shakedown like GetSatisfaction.com.

Good shit my dude. Cause it seemed to me like they popped outta nowhere. Never even heard of the site before 09. IS there anyway to know the difference from the sites that run the Quantcast analytics tracking and the sites that don't?

It's cool, thanks anyway. It would be useful to know because atleast then you know how credible the stats are that you are looking at. Feel me?
I think they also get some ISP data for their stats
They are useful to research any med-large site (10,000+ UV per day)
but smaller ones, they are pretty useless.

I use them on a number of sites, and they report about 50% - 70% of actual traffic that GA shows me.
I've talked a with a rep there, they have a staff of mathematicians that have created and algorithm that estimates traffic. They are also tied into ISP's similar to Hitwise

I know when I owned a site that got 10,000 USA uniques/day (and 30,000 total uniques/day) quantcast estimated I was getting 15,000 USA uniques/month.
Even though Alexa only gives you relative information it is much better.

It's definitely ISP+Panel.
That's why there is a shit ton of sites that don't have quantcast installed still showing.
