Any of you guys that moved abroad have a dog?

My dog is from here, but I did bring a cat with me from Canada. It's a bit of work as it needs to be revaccinated, has to have a blood test done within 30 or 45 (can't remember) days of coming here to make sure it's free from any viruses, and it needs to be dewormed also within a certain time frame before coming. It also needs to be microchipped and all this info needs to be recorded in its passport and travel documents. If things aren't in order with its paperwork, that could be problematic. This is true for all dogs entering from outside Europe as well. Its law here in Europe that all dogs and cats need to be microchipped, annually vaccinated, and all this is recorded in their passports.

You need to get a high end crate that is airline certified, which must be big enough for the animal to fully stand up and turn around in (don't skimp on the crate). We used an animal shipping company that shipped the cat to a large clearing center that exists in Frankfurt where pets are processed, cleaned up and fed, and kept overnight before the next leg of their journey. In our case Malaga airport. Once in Spain all the paperwork was double checked and the cat released to me, a little pissed off, but none worse the wear.

The cost was around $1000 but that included a few days of boarding before the cat was shipped as well.

I know others that have shipped their dogs here and back again, and while it requires jumping through a few hoops, it's not that big a deal. I guess it all depends on where you're going though. The rules are different for many countries. Some places require a lengthy quarantine for animals entering. The UK, for example, recently removed a 90 day quarantine on animals entering from the EU, but still maintains a 4 month quarantine for animals coming from some other places. I think that's a bit unfair and it might make me question if it's worth putting the dog through something like that.

Do your research. You don't want any surprises.

@Kiopa, how much does it cost to buy a dog in Thailand?

Depends if you want a pure bred or not. If you don't care, then free. Just spend some time here, get to know some people, and someone will eventually end up with a litter of dogs they want to get rid of. Grab one of them.

If you want pure bred, then anywhere from say $200 - $1500, depending on breed, breeder, etc.

Would you recommend that OP put his existing dog to sleep and buy a new dog in the new country he immigrates to?

it is really that hard. you can even leave the house for the whole day else your dog starves to death. leave it to someone you know who loves dogs.

I was trying to move my dog to Bali with me. Cost was $2000 and no guarantee dog would be alive. So i decided to leave this idea
