Does it matter whether or not there is a slash between the url and your affiliate id? For example should it be like this:

example.com/?referral

or like this:
example.com?referral

Does it make any difference?

This is way too advanced a question for this board ninja. You sound like a true internet warrior and digitally on point and deserve to get flooded with replies by like minded folks. I would suggest googling 'forum for internet warriors' and 'digitally on point forum' and if you can find those hard to reach syndicates of knowledge that contain the real online experts you may get the answers you seek.

Just delete ?referral from the link all together.

So instead of sending to example.com?referral, just send directly to example.com

slash /? means to send an affiliate information to the server with you referral url, don't worry about it.
