Every time I start doing niche research I get the feeling the results these keyword tools give me are complete bullsit.
For example:
According to Wordtrackers free keyword tool, the phrase
"sw40ve" got 31 searches
"smith & wesson sw40ve" got 6 searches
"sigma sw40ve" got 3 searches
But "smith and wesson sigma sw40ve pistol review" got 1569 searches!

Every time I start digging into keyword research I run into tons of examples like this. I can't help but think the data is completely unreliable.
All of the tools I have tried so far (mostly free ones) produce similar bullshit results. If some of the data is obviously very inaccurate, how can you trust any of it?

Are all the keyword tools like this? Has anyone found an accurate keyword tool?

P.S.- I'm not researching handguns. This came up during a search of the keyword "review", so I called bullshit and searched the specific keyword for more evidence.

Emjay,
That is a much better tool.
It's like wordtracker and these other tools just take a small sample of queries (like 30 minutes) then apply some algorithm to extrapolate what the search volume would be for the month.

Even the Google Keyword tool isn't accurate for low volumes. I have personally done a lot of testing on it and it's not even close.

Edit: if you really want to find out the number of searches. Create a PPC campaign with your selected keywords. Bid so you get an average position of 7-8. Put a title on your add that is irrelevant to the search term so it doesn't get clicked.

Now check your page impressions.

You should really try to think of keywords for yourself. I started a campaign a few months ago with several targetted adgroups and keywords and these were all from google's adword keyword tool. Out of probably a hundred keywords I found, only 3-4 were generating decent revenue a day and the only top performing keyword that was outstanding was a keyword that I came up with on my own just by analyzing the merchants site. Just that one keyword brought in $1K a week for almost 2 months.
