Ok, happy birthday to me. I went to bed last night and my laptop was running perfectly as it has for more than a year. Unplugged it and set on the stand next to the bed. Got up this morning, turned it on to do some work. After about 15 minutes, the mouse was totally unresponsive and then the screen got lines across it like a flicker and then I noticed that the keyboard was unresponsive as well.

Tried to do a crtl-alt-backspace(I'm using Ubuntu on it) and got nothing so I did a hard reset with the power off button. When it came to reboot, the cd drive lit up to show it was working, but no hard drive lights and a dead screen.

It ain't a virus cuz I use Linux so I am at a total loss as to the reason why. The nearest laptop repair shop is hundreds of miles away so I'm kind of stuck.

My guess? A bug of some sort, literally. What a great birthday present. Now I get to recover my data.

Hmm.. can you boot at all? Or is it the whole CD drive going crazy thing?

If you can at least get something to show up, try a boot CD to recovery data (if you can get the HD to load, that is)

Only thing I can think of is let the battery run dead, sometimes that resets the bios - and if not, do a manual reset by removing the little battery on the mobo, sometimes that'll flash the bios back to normal

Hope this helps..

I have thought that it could be the BIOS. I might try that trick in the morning. I have the battery out of it and will keep it out all night. Thanks for the idea!

It's still sitting there with the battery out, being that the computer is 100% dead, it cant get fucked up any worse than it already is.

LMAO!

I mean 100% literally. There is a chance that really do have a bug. Unplug the computer from the wall. Open the case up, unplug the power supply. Unscrew the case to the power supply (two pieces usually four screws). Look inside.

Check for cockroaches. They are the most common. They will climb in power supplies because they are warm. They will slowly short out the power supply causing all the components in the computer to spontaneously loose and regain power, hence a freeze up. Eventually the power supply will completely burn up if it doesn't die soon enough (even getting 120v they can survive).

No joke dude, I've seen this quite a few times. Anytime a client comes in and describes exactly what your saying is happening first thing we do is open the power supply and check for bug guts. Often times they're still alive and jump out.

My laptop once got infested by ants. The computer worked perfectly except that ants were crawling out of the ventilation ducts.

Ugh. My ex-roommate brought home a microwave that he got out of his parents' garage or something. I noticed that it freakin' stunk every time he used it so I refused to. When I was in the kitchen one day I noticed a roach slither out of the vent on the side. Took it outside and opened it up and it was full of tiny roaches. I yakked in the bushes because of the smell.

He was banned from bringing anything else into the house without close inspection after that.

I once found ten mexicans living in my computer.
