I wish there was a larger standardized set of fonts you could use as text within pages though. Now that would be handy!

Some of those 50 are web fonts. There are so many web fonts now that you can use. I use Typekit for all my sites and it has a pretty extensive selection of fonts that are suitable for headlines and copy. Same goes for Google fonts, Fonts.com, Font Squirrel, etc. etc. They all use @font-face to serve up fonts. In the case of Typekit, Fonts.com and Google, they serve the fonts via their CDN, or you self host fonts with Font Squirrel.
If you're looking for nice sans serifs, look at Source Sans Pro (first open source font from Adobe) or Open Sans. Also good, just off the top of my head, are Droid, Ubuntu, and Museo.
You guys might want to give this service a try. It's an interactive typesetting tool that lets you spec fonts from Google, Typekit, Fontdeck, Fonts.com, and Webtype all at the same time, which pretty much makes up the bulk of the web font services. You embed a bit of script in your header and it pulls down the font sets, updates your sites as you make changes, so you can mix and match fonts from multiple sources in real time.
It's pretty freakin' awesome.

There is nothing worse than making an effort into implementing a nice @font, only to see that is looks like shit once it renders in browser without cleartype enabled. ie. Lucida Sans (grindstoneseo.com).

Cleartype is turned on by default. The rendering problems in Chrome have nothing to do with Cleartype, it's a bug in the browser. Fonts usually render perfectly in IE & FF, but look like ass in Chrome.

It's kind of ironic that Google fonts look their worst in Google's own browser.
