Could work out for him. Most professional athletes go broke instantly. If he puts the money he has in the right hands, he'll come out in 10 years (typically serve half the sentence) with double his money, whereas a typical player's trajectory would have him broke within those 10 years.

Double the money, and maybe some maturity will allow him to have a lot better life than if he never went to prison.
