Not really that familiar with either one, but am about to pull the trigger on hosting. Is one any easier than the other learning curve wise? I'm asking because I will probably go with ZenSix, but I know they just switched to DirectAdmin. Is Installatron comparable to Fantastico? Basically is on more advantagous over the other. Or are they pretty much the same?

Don't let not knowing installatron stop you from picking a host. It's no biggie, just a little time to get comfortable with it and you should be on your way. As the end user, I don't care if it's fantastico or installatron, but I know alot of people have complained about fantastico because of the security issues.

Edit: I think at one time zensix had a live demo of installatron...check around their site to see if they still do.

Once you're familiar with Installatron, it really is better than Fantastico (and DirectAdmin is better than cPanel). Installatron can do a lot more than Fantastico can...

Check out Installatron's live demo and video on their site: Installatron Applications Installer

And DirectAdmin's demo here: DirectAdmin Web Control Panel Demo

I have been using WHM and Cpanel for years, and I just tried DA and Installatron @ ZenSix and I love it.

I don't think I will use CPanel again given the choice.

Admin panels are way over rated. They just slow your system down quite a bit. At various points in time I have noticed that they all eat about 1/2 of your system resources.

I use ISPConfig personally and love it. Version 3 has it to where you have different mail server, web server, database server and control it all from one panel. For free it doesn't get any better than that. I just don't see why people want to pay an additional $20+ per month for a control panel when they can get a perfectly good one for free.

Of course it doesn't have installatron or fantastico. But with those installers you are reliant on the companies to keep up with the latest and greatest versions of all the applications. You talk about Fantastico and the security issues it poses and that is mostly because it installs old unpatched versions of scripts .

If you are scared of installing your own control panel and stuff it is really easy. HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials has their Perfect Server series for all main Linux flavors. And they walk you through a comlete web server install in less than two hours time really. Spending a few hours time setting up a server is much better than paying monthly for a license IMHO.

DirectAdmin with the Power User theme is golden. Been using DirectAdmin for about 4 years now. CPanel is bloat.

Webmin works for me, and it's free. Dropping the resource hog Cpanel allows me to near triple the number of sites per server.

I've been meaning to mess around with webmin/virtualmin for a while now. After reading your post I decided to test it out. I was pretty disappointed to see that the combo of webmin/virtualmin takes up 300MB+ of RAM after a default install with no domains... About 50MB more than DirectAdmin w/ CSF.

Of course webmin only used about 35MB of RAM by itself, but it's a bit too basic for my tastes.

DirectAdmin + Installatron is what I used for a long time, and I actually prefer Installatron as they update their software packages more often, giving you less risk of their being an exploit for someone to abuse your server.

cPanel is the better control panel of the two though.

My money goes for DirectAdmin hands down. Easier, neater... I don't spend the whole day configuring hosting accounts, so I don't really need all the options CPanel gives you and I never use.

I'm going to give the vote for cPanel. Its industry standard at this point, and personally, I think its pretty excellent.

That said, I went with DA at Zensix too, because that's kinda what subigo's pushing. I don't mind it, but I certainly prefer cPanel for its UI/functionality.

The only thing I don't like about DA, is how the homepage of the panel is laid out. Things could be grouped a little better, but as far as functionality, it is pretty solid. I've used CPanel and WHM for a long time, and I don't touch 90% of the functionality they have. A lot of it is bloat.

So playing about with my new DirectAdmin interface for the first time, when I try installing wordpress via installatron directly into the root of the domain (ie, not entering a path), it doesn't load WP when I click on the URL link. Instead I get a page instructing me to install my website into public_html. The wp-admin is set up correctly. Installatron preset for the path is wordpress but I really don't want my site to be at domain.com/wordpress.

So what's the workaround on installing directly onto your domain homepage?
