Then he presents himself as Yugely Successful, anti-PC, Alpha dude.
AND Plays on the fears/motivation of a large % of the electorate.
Not enough to win, but enough to do well enough this far.
The state of the government is the same as the state of the people, the calibration level of most people are pretty bad, but don't worry, we will find the right person to take position when calibrated correctly.

Because I treat the elections like entertainment and do not take them seriously, I'm able to root for Trump without being burdened by things like thinking he would be a good President. This makes me feel like a professional wrestling fan in the early 1980s who realizes it's fake/rigged/pre-determined/etc while most people around him do not.
From a serious perspective, however, Jeb Bush seems so dorky and socially awkward that it makes me inwardly cringe a little every time I see him. That goofball high-five to Trump is a good example.
