I have accepted your challenge. Putting it here makes it time to put up or shut up, so here it is.
Considered deleting this message so I could
think about it some more... Ya know, make sure I'd thought of everything
That really is one of my pet peeves, people that talk, talk, talk and never do.
So here it is...
Join the Joyvolution & Change the World! - RainbowRiver is my start.
Hi. Thanks for commenting on my blog. I was going to email you some thoughts about your site, but other people may be able to offer advice too and also benefit, so I'll post here.
Firstly, I love the psychedelic background (actually nicked it for my desktop!), but the rest of the site doesn't seem to quite fit design-wise. There seems to be 3 different designs - the main site, forum and hosting pages. If you could match it to the colour scheme in the background (without it being too intense) it would look better in my opinion.
Not sure about the branding, if it's called Rainbow River you could do with an appropriate domain. (Although to me that reminds me of the rainbow bridge dog heaven thing or gay rights rainbow flags.)
Some of the internal links open in new windows (very annoying).
The forum would look less empty with less sections - add more sections as it gets busier.
If it's members only to read (you mention that, but at present I can read without joining) then the search engines won't see your forum content either.
I like the idea, but really don't think it will work as a MLM paid subscription model. There's
threads here that show how members of an established forum full of content feel about paying (and the amount of people with sigs is evidence in itself) so you'll have a hard job selling your site. Sorry, I totally disagree with you about people being motivated to buy a premium membership just to give to the people higher up the pyramid and creating a hierarchy of user classes doesn't strike me as in keeping with the hippy ethic.
Overall I think it could work but with a different income model. Advertising is the obvious choice. I saw your concerns, but you could say use adsense and filter out certain words or sites, or maybe look at the many affiliate programs for charities that are about. Be aware though, the general opinion is that running a forum is a lot of work for little reward, especially in the short term.
Sorry if this sounds harsh, as a fellow hippy (with a why?

) I really like what you are trying to do. Good luck.
