Mind posting that cycle site link? His server is slow and I've been unable to find it as of yet.

Aequitas... great post. What's the deal with viscript now? Who's selling it.

Honestly I have no clue, last I heard the guy I sold it too, sold it to someone else, I know that for a fact cause I helped put it on the new guys server, they were supposed to pay me for it but that never happend. No big deal only took a few minutes anyway.

As for updates, who's running the show with it, ect... Got no clue, I don't have contact with the new owners the only thing I know is that they are from the UK and probably don't know how to update it considering I had to upload it to there servers for them.

I should buy my time and offer them a low price for it and buy it back lol.

Haha, I think one of his cycle sites scraped my blog...

Affiliate Marketing » A Great Example of Outside-The-Box Thinking

It looks identical to what he described. All you newbies can take a look at that for an example I guess.

Edit: Here is his "web host", clever shit.
Hosting-Wire.com - Premium Website Hosting at Affordable Prices

Yeah, they've even used one of the themes Eli included in his WP download!
The fake privacy name and email are nice extras on the whois.

I have accepted your challenge. Putting it here makes it time to put up or shut up, so here it is.

Considered deleting this message so I could think about it some more... Ya know, make sure I'd thought of everything

That really is one of my pet peeves, people that talk, talk, talk and never do.

So here it is...Join the Joyvolution & Change the World! - RainbowRiver is my start.

Hi. Thanks for commenting on my blog. I was going to email you some thoughts about your site, but other people may be able to offer advice too and also benefit, so I'll post here.

Firstly, I love the psychedelic background (actually nicked it for my desktop!), but the rest of the site doesn't seem to quite fit design-wise. There seems to be 3 different designs - the main site, forum and hosting pages. If you could match it to the colour scheme in the background (without it being too intense) it would look better in my opinion.

Not sure about the branding, if it's called Rainbow River you could do with an appropriate domain. (Although to me that reminds me of the rainbow bridge dog heaven thing or gay rights rainbow flags.)

Some of the internal links open in new windows (very annoying).

The forum would look less empty with less sections - add more sections as it gets busier.

If it's members only to read (you mention that, but at present I can read without joining) then the search engines won't see your forum content either.

I like the idea, but really don't think it will work as a MLM paid subscription model. There's threads here that show how members of an established forum full of content feel about paying (and the amount of people with sigs is evidence in itself) so you'll have a hard job selling your site. Sorry, I totally disagree with you about people being motivated to buy a premium membership just to give to the people higher up the pyramid and creating a hierarchy of user classes doesn't strike me as in keeping with the hippy ethic.

Overall I think it could work but with a different income model. Advertising is the obvious choice. I saw your concerns, but you could say use adsense and filter out certain words or sites, or maybe look at the many affiliate programs for charities that are about. Be aware though, the general opinion is that running a forum is a lot of work for little reward, especially in the short term.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, as a fellow hippy (with a why? ;)) I really like what you are trying to do. Good luck.

Are these blackhat techniques? autoblogging, and creating cycle sites could this get you deslisted from SE's. I just want to make sure I try this on something that I can throw away and not on a WH site.

Yes, cycle sites are certainly black hat and will get deindexed /banned if you leave them up too long. Autoblogs are less risky, but could get penalized as well. I think your chances of having any problems with a basic autoblog are slim if you mix things up enough, get some decent inbound links and don't over-ping the shit out of the aggregators.

Ok. Total Noob alert. I'm sure I should get the difference between cyle sites and auto blogging by now after this massive thread and Eli's seo empire article but it's not clicking yet ( perhaps it's because I've only read the article twice and not the recommended 6 times ;P ) Was this what you were talking about Lazy hippy with Splogs? Again, sorry for any possible redundancy.

I've set up my autoblogs and I've been posting about 5 posts per blog per day. In addition, I am using the "black hole" RSS feed generation and ping technique.

Mike, any idea what the threshold would be for over-pinging the aggregators? I'm sure it's different for every aggregator, but I wonder if you've ever run into a problem over-pinging. With the black hole technique I am using I can easily end up pinging each aggregator a few hundred times a day. Think I should scale it back some?

I might end up setting up a few groups of autoblogs, some of which I ping a ton, some of which I ping a good amount, and some of which I only ping when I make actual posts (i.e. no black hole pinging).

Are you using the built in Wordpress pinging? If so I know there is a plugin that allows you to set the max number of pings for a day no matter the number of posts. That should help keep you from getting banned. If there is interest I will try and find it, it is somewhere on one of my servers.

Dave

I should be reading those posts that were mentioned on the first page, I'm just trying to do a million things at once and now trying to keep up with this thread at the same time.

For autoblogging, where are you getting the content. Are you using some scripts to scrape content and have WP post automatically?

I just took a look at that "rss scraping and autoblogging" post and "Bam Bam" mentinoned:

"I have one blog setup which Scrapes Google Blog Search results for certain keywords, Google news, yahoo news and a few well known blog sites."

Does anybody know where somebody could get more information on this?

Splog = spam-blog. I don't like the term myself, prefer 'aggregated content' :)

An autoblog/splog/whatever you call it will normally be aiming to get traffic from pages indexed in the search engines, a cycle site aims to pick up links from trackbacks posted on the blogs it takes content from. So for a normal autoblog the content can come from anywhere - serps, news sites, youtube, forums, anywhere with a feed. For a cycle site you want to only use places where you've got a chance of a trackback link - normally blogs, but...

Forums might work too! Some forums (like here) post trackbacks so could work, just need a way of finding out which ones.

I'm up for a n00b challenge!

Just to let everybody I'll be jumping in this here contest, too. I've been lurking around and reading these forums from time to time since I've joined but never really posted.

I guess the prize has already been determined by SEO_Mike with it being us n00bs getting all this GREAT advice from you all, our experience and the money we'll be making plus whatever else I failed to mention that he already did. In that same sense I guess we can't determine a winner if we judge by all the different ways we'll all be benefitting from it unless we look at it from strictly a monetary point of view which I don't think will be a true measure of how "successful" some of us may be from this challenge. Example, someone may benefit more from knowing almost nothing and going from ground zero to $5/day than say I could going from having the know-how to do all this and making $0.10/day to $10/day. I hope that makes sense to everyone.

FWIW, I actually started my own little challenge to myself earlier this week after literally reading and reading and reading nonstop on this forum on ways to make money. I finally put my foot down and said I've gotta put all this knowledge to work for me and finally got off my ass and started doing something. And then I stumbled onto this post by luck last night.

I've already got one autoblog going and another that I'm working on. I hope to add blog-flipping to my projects as well as some cycle sites and even PPC campaigns. And I've already graduated from $0.10/day to $0.50/day but that's from a PPC campaign to generate traffic. I'll be backing off that particular campaign for this challenge to see how well I'll be able to supply my sites with traffic by other means.

Good luck to all!

And thanks A TON to all that are helping us n00bs. The amount of information I've gained in reading this thread alone from you guys is absurd!

Firstly, a big thanks to everyone in this thread. There's enough information and inspiration to keep me going for a long while. Hell, thanks for WF period. I'm not a huge forum person, and joining up has been one of the best decisions I've made.

:moon: Excuse me a moment while I dislodge my nose from the forum's collective colon...

So. After lurking, I've decided to participate in this. I could really use some suggestions/pointers, etc. I'm going to be as "full disclosure" as possible. Aequitas' posts were a huge help in getting me started. Actually, the post on his blog he mentioned about keyword research was monumental. So, taking the information from there, here's what I did:
  • Stared blankly at SEO Book's Keyword Suggestion Tool for a while, then started tossing in keywords as ideas came and went. I repeated the process I'm going to describe below a few times.
  • I put in the word "bridges." It seemed obscure-ish yet common (if that makes any sense at all), and looked through the results. "Brooklyn bridge at night" was in there. It had around 5k total searches, with 3k or so from Google.
  • I was interested, so I Googled the string as well as allinurl and allintitle. Here's the results:
    • String: 1.1 million results
    • allinurl: 1,720 results
    • allintitle: 1,340 results
  • Ok. So now I went and checked the competition on the term. None of them were main pages. Links to the pages ranged from 38 to 557 (wikipedia - not at the #1, for a change).
    • Quick note: SEO Quake makes checking the competition a snap.
  • So at this point I figured screw it, I'll make a site. If it flops, whatever, I learned.
  • So I grabbed a domain, built a site, and now it's live: brooklynbridgeatnight.com.
I'd really dig it if you guys wouldn't mind pointing out any flaws in my research process and/or checking out the page. It's monetized by adsense and an allposters aff program.

So hopefully I'm in the right direction, but if not, you're encouraged to slap me around.
Thanks again.
