The dark? Best cheap thrill you can get. Get yourself a GPS and go nighttime
geocaching. I haven't done this in a while, but last time I did... I went alone straight into the woods, coordinates pre-programmed in my GPS, full back pack of gear.
I waited in my car on the side of the woods until it was completely dark to start. Then walked down a trail for roughly 3km, homeless congregated under a train bridge not far from where I was at this point(500M maybe, I know this because I snuck there another night(but that's a different story)) this night I was going in the opposite direction. The distances don't sound like a lot, but at night, when you're practically sneaking around, it takes a while.
Walked around .5KM off the trail into the bush. The tension had really built up at this point. I found myself stopping every so often, turning off my light and just listening to all the different sounds you hear in the woods at night. I was constantly evaluating my surroundings, ultra aware... Sometimes you see little pairs of eyes reflecting your flash light back at you, or hear creature foot steps of varying sizes.
Finally, after looking around for a while, I found the cache, hung in the tree in a camo 2L container. I sat down with it, looked at all the trinkets inside, signed the log book and left some coins inside for the next people to find. I had brought a Rickard's white beer wrapped in news paper(to keep it cold) and a 'smoke' so I took those out and celebrated my first night time find.
After my brief celebration, it was time to head back to the car. The entire walk back, I felt no relief from the tension at all. I trekked back out and it's literally only when I opened my car door and sat down it hit me instantly, I can't even describe the ecstasy I felt. It's as if I cured myself of a terrible disease I was so happy. So ya, if you want to feel alive, I have no better suggestion than the above.
