Kansas City wins the Google Fiber bid.

It's an industrialized slum... This will help them a lot.

I'm just south of KCK in OP... Don't know yet if we'll get any but it could happen.

And coincidentally I made this thread about this over in the industry news section...

Why wouldn't they do this in Chicago, the best city in the world? Dumb move Google.

Clearly they wanted to make as much of a difference as possible.

If they'd done this in Chicago, then the economy would pick up there 2%.

Now the economy in KCK is going to pick up 6,503% and they're going to use those numbers to say: Look what we can do for your city... Order your fiberOp today!"

Exactly. Kansas City, KS. is a complete shit hole. Anything Google does there is going to look fantastic on paper.

They also wanted their test network to be in a city of under 500,000. Kansas City has just under 500,000 in their city limits. The city of Chicago has almost 2.7 million.

...But at the same time there is a lot of Commercial growth up there. The Legends there is now the best shopping destination for the entire KC area and is right beside our new NASCAR arena... Before that neighborhood was developed, this place was a right shithole. Much like Detroit! (Actually the residential areas nearby are very much like detroit... Boarded up shit-slums all over town...)

I was planning on moving out of here soon, but I haven't decided where to go yet. Now I wanna see how this plays out, because 1GB of fiber into my home office is just what the doctor ordered for my bizness!

I am guessing this is mainly for businesses? I don't see the point of having 1gbps for your home. I got 20mbps internet and its more than fast enough for me. 1gig downloads only takes 10mins if the other website has a strong connection.

Which brings up another problem, Who can put out that kind of download speeds right now? And its gonna cost like 300$ per month for this. Seems pointless for the average person. Good for businesses. Or maybe not... In theory could a huge office run off one modem with these speeds?

I know that area and it seems surprising they picked it. Maybe it's because nobody cares if they tear up the roads and neighborhoods digging it all up for fibre drops. I didn't know those people even had computers over there. You have industrial and somewhat poorer neighborhoods but like lukep said above, the whole area where the kansas speedway is growing fast from a commercial standpoint.

Hopefully that will kick those douchebags timewarner in the ass to speed up their flakey ass network. Alot of carrier fibre running through downtown KC, easy to tap into. Google has a growing relationship with Sprint, plus there also based in Kansas so you have to wonder if more is to come.

Exactly, it's a very smart move.

1st they own the data and then the access to the data. Very very scary situation not only this country is facing but the world.
