I just want to go on record as saying that AuthorityLabs is a piece of shit. I've been an affiliate there for awhile and referred quite a few paying customers (No MSM affiliate program). Anyways like two months ago they said they were transitioning onto a new interface and would port all my data (including my leads etc) for me.

I keep checking the old interface, thinking that they would just update it. NOPE - turns out I have to make a new account and then sign up to be an affiliate again and then wait two weeks until they port my old affiliate data over (which they haven't been updating for 2 months, but apparently they've been updating it on the new interface which I didn't have an account for?).

Now they say that it will take two weeks to map the old data over so now I have no idea how many active accounts I have, how many new accounts are coming in per day - nothing.

I hope this company dies quickly. I fucking hate you so much Authoritylabs - you're results are a fucking mess and you're a shit company.

I should've just forgone the commissions and sent people directly to MSM - which I am going to do now even though it'll cost me.

inb4 - you're a faggot, coolstarrybra.jpg etc.

why u no msm?

I do use MSM, I was running ranktracker offers and authoritylabs pays a 50% lifetime comission so I was sending people to authoritylabs. I was making semi decent money even though they can only convert free accounts into paid accounts like 5% of the time until they completely fucked me with this stupid dashboard update.

I really feel like shitting in a bag and sending it to them.

j/k. I've been waiting forever to use that.

Tencentpiece,

Sorry to hear about the misunderstanding on how the transition for affiliates is being handled. Let me start off with saying that all affiliates are current on all paid accounts they have referred. You haven't been shorted any leads and won't be shorted any leads. It's just a matter of getting the reporting interface for affiliates updated so that all referrals are showing. If you'd like, we can run a manual report and let you know all referrals and commissions as often as you would like until that new reporting is live. I can be reached at brian@authoritylabs.com.

The reason why you need to create a new account is that affiliates are being handled differently in our new system than the old one. Old affiliates were associated with an account for rank tracking. In the new interface, only your user is tied to an affiliate account. This means that any user can sign up to be an affiliate, not just an account owner. That also means that you can refer your own SEO clients to sign up for accounts, get paid for that account, and your user has access to as many client accounts as you refer. We feel that's an improvement.

We also changed how authentication works and old credentials could not be ported over in a reasonable way.

Regarding the affiliate program migration, we have tracked every referral from the old system and new system, even if you don't yet have an account in the new system. I have a database that maps all old affiliate links to their new account once they sign up for a new account and have a referral code in the new system. We felt that making sure that affiliates didn't have to change their links if they didn't want to was a respectful way of handling that migration. So far, every other affiliate I've heard from appreciates that kind of service and organization.

I also solicited all of our affiliates who were sending referrals for feedback on how we could make the program better for them. We even kicked around the option to sign up with a network but the cost to do that would have eaten into the payouts available. As far as I know, nobody in the SEO tool space is offering 50% commission for the life of an account. That shows how much we value our affiliates.

I'm not going to get into the MSM vs. AuthorityLabs, etc. debate. I respect Rob and I'm sure MSM works for some people. We run data on tens of billions of URL/keyword combos every month. There's always the potential for data to be skewed in a few instances. If you have examples of data being inaccurate, please feel free to contact us. We typically respond to support requests within a few hours and we do the research to make sure everyone is getting the best data available. We only get a couple inquiries a month regarding accuracy and those are typically corrected within a day and are the result of experimental layouts served to us or minor changes that need to be made to regular expressions that are used for parsing SERPs. From an affiliate perspective, that should also be seen as a plus.

We do appreciate the feedback though. Obviously the way we communicated the migration could be improved and we'll take your comments into consideration. Going forward, there shouldn't be any more migrations. The old system was nearly 4 years old. The new one should last substantially longer as it was built to handle the dozens of terabytes of data we're dealing with.

I know what it's like to be an affiliate and feel like you're being left in the dark. That has not been our intention. Again, we apologize for the misunderstanding.

We're all really lucky in this space now. Compared to a year and a half ago, we have at least two really mature platforms to use. MSM and AL both offer really awesome data at a very reasonable price. There have been some jokers in this space, and luckily, the free market has fuck-or-walked them right out of it.

I've known Rob for Years, and I've known the AL guys for years. It's kind of a bummer you wanted to start a mob instead of just send an email. I know Brian made his living as an SEO affiliate, and when someone is having a problem he bends over backwards to help them. I think this is evidenced pretty well in his response above.

Hope we all can agree on one thing: it's never been a better time to be an SEO affiliate!

Cheers,

Josh

Not being able to accurately track leads for a period of 14 days is not 'solid'. Thankfully I was running organic traffic, because if I was running paid I'd have to have stopped until the issue was resolved.

You're right on one thing, the free market does prevail and now AL will lose my leads as they were unable to provide a stable platform.

In situations where you have to convert a large database of people, it best to not make people re-create their username, email and password.

The old db should have imported the user info or worst case scenario only their emails, and sent out a requests stating "due to new security upgrades, with had to reset yor password", so each user would have to input a new password into the system. If you can save the password and all their user info content that would have been best and not create a hassle for people to re-create their account, you miminize negative press.

This situation is very common for example when moving from one shopping cart platform to another.
I read the explanation and the possible worst case scenario would have been to import a CSV and reset all users' passwords, of just people who were affilites, if that was absolutely not possible, then import everyone. New logins are never a good idea from a user standpoint. Imagine if Facebook told all their users, "Hey we are upgrading to a new system, and need you to re-create your login info." The amount of backlash would sent their stock plummeting. Humans are so opposed to change, that if they must, you have to make it so smooth they hardly notice a thing. New interfaces are a huge change - a new login??? Very bad idea.

The job of a project manager is to minimize user problems versus the coders doing alot of work. It the little things that matter to the users. Its the job of the coder to figure out how to get it done smoothly.

With that being said, I sincerely hope AL, and hopefully this was a mere bump in the road on their way to continued success.
