Schwarzenegger is the man!

So if you spent 4-6 years getting a degree (and spent a boatload on tuition due to the huge tuition increases) and had a decent paying job with the state with a wife and kids to support, you wouldn't mind getting dropped down to minimum wage just because these fuckers can't run their state?

You have no idea what you are talking about.

State workers are getting punished thanks to housing speculation and it has zero to do with their college degrees.

Houses that went up to $700k+ in '06 that are now worth $300k or less means the state has a huge deficit because it's now receiving basically 50% of the income it used to receive from property taxes...

It is not the state workers fault. It is the housing boom that everyone bought into, and by everyone I mean EVERYONE. Anyone who even owned a single share of various mutual funds owned a piece of the pie, everyone had their hands in the cookie jar and then the jar shattered.

Could we do with less of the state workers that really don't serve a purpose and are on some in-between administrative division? Yes. But we should cut all those useless departments out instead of reducing pay.

I know all about the housing bubble... i work in bank foreclosures.

And yes i understand all about how it isn't the little guys fault who is now getting the shaft at $7.25 an hour.

But guess what? The state is BROKE. That means no more money.

In the private sector those people that get $7.25/hour would be out on the street... because their company (aka California) is BANKRUPT.

You remember when Clinton 'closed' the federal government until Congress could decide on a budget?.... No?

More drama about the budget just helps increase support for the taxation of marijuana which will be on the ballot. Things are looking good.

Yup, that's it. Fuck over the state employees because those at the top created an unsustainable government. I would be willing to bet that if you would end all benefits to non-citizens (I'm talking school, medical, housing, everything), California would have more money than it knew what to do with.

Welcome to the real world. What do you think was going on in the private sector the past two fucking years??

The economy tanks and people don't spend money. Businesses loses business, cash flow slows or stops, credit dries up and the Business has to make choices. Reduce payroll, make layoffs, freeze growth etc.

Are State workers immune from the realities that people in real business have to face?

I'm not saying I don't feel bad for them, I'm just sick of this ridiculous government growth and then when times are lean or it's time to make cuts for budgetary reason like the real world has to, the left pitches a fit.

It's like all these fucks in Greece and France striking and whining because they actually have to work 25 hours a week because their countries are fucking broke.

Government is too fucking big, inefficient and intrusive.

bottom line is, all state employees are at-will employees. if they don't want to work for that wage, they can leave. no one is "forcing them" to work for $7/hour. it's not unjust to change someone's wage.

the taxpayers of California have a right to have their tax dollars spent in the most efficient way possible. many state workers hardly do a thing (look at DMV workers, for example, or Cal Trans workers) and are making huge inflated salaries + benefit packages. a fair wage is what is agreed to by both parties. if $7 isn't enough for a state worker, they should seek a job in the private sector like everyone else. everyone should be on a level playing field, and should have equal access to state jobs.... all these hiring freezes have been BS. let's say the state has been paying person X with Y qualifications to do Z job for $80,000 a year. if another person A comes along with the same Y qualifications to do Z job and is willing to do the job for $40,000 a year, the state should get rid of person X and hire person A to help save taxpayers' money.

Minimum wage is way too high. They'd be pumping gas if the minimum wage hadn't destroyed those jobs. Private sector layoffs have been through the roof in CA but the state has hired parasites all through the recession and increased their workforce. Those parasites can suck it.

the economy is forcing them, people need to eat and shit! eating costs money

Technically, we may have the right but the government is secretive and does what they do with it.

literally not enough creative business people (future affiliates) to start the companies where these people could prosper.

that theory doesn't breed any innovation though. Businesses should balance profitability with quality and not be so damn greedy because that brings us down as a whole. I worked at my uncles machine shop for 3 years and he got slaughtered because of all these unqualified Mexicans whore themselves out to the lowest bidder. Lowest bidder = impending doom

If you want competent governance you aren't going to attract anyone with any level of skill with minimum wage. Cheaper I guess, but shit services. You get what you pay for.

yeah, i would feel really bad for those college educated workers who helped drive the economy into the ground

uh, it's not a taxation problem. It's a spending problem. The boom that resulted in huge property tax windfalls didn't force California to drive spending through the roof. No one held a gun to their heads saying, "spend it all, dammit!" Instead of spending it, it would have been nice to return it to the people who earned it to begin with.
