So I saw this special on 20/20 on friday night about people using a treadmill as a work station. ABC News: Do Treadmills at the Office Work? It's not a new concept I had read about it before and thought it interesting and then forgot about it. After watching it on Friday and how easy it was to do and how healthy you could get, not to mention how easily the pounds melt away, I decided to try it. All I had to do was put a piece of wood on top of my treadmill (that I already had) and VOILA! I have one of those treadmill work stations (without pay 7K for it!)

It's incredibly ugly but that's ok, as it's in the incredibly ugly misc room in my house (guestroom/excersise room/tv room for my son/study for my husband). We're thinking that if this works and I can get used to it and enjoy it, then we'll go more posh with a flatscreen on a swivel mount and a remote keyboard on the treadmill with my laptop in a docking station.

Anyway, Most people would have no interest in this as they work a 9-5 in an office and they are at the mercy of what the office wants to do. However, I figured some of you wf's who might like to get off your ass during the day, burn an extra 500-1000 calories aday, and still get some work done would be interested. ;)

seems to me it'd be a lot more fun to actually work on a bike, instead of trying to type while running on a treadmill

Can I make a suggestion? Buy a 32" LCD tv with PC input and a wireless mouse/keyboard. You're going to puke if you try to read that small little monitor while running. Typing? Fuggiddaboutit. You need a full keyboard and a large mouse.

Aside from that, awesome setup. I've thought MANY times of doing this myself, but then I crack a bottle of Macallan and those thoughts go right away!

Maybe some wide bungee cables between the handrails for the belly would help too! (Sorry, had to throw that one out!)

@barman, I had seen some comments on a blog that said the same thing. It's what ever your preference is. Either way would work and whatever get's you off your butt right?

@bb, that's exactly what we're going to do if this is to hard to get used too (32 inch and everything) We figure the upgrade (with the swivel mount, the LCD..ect) would be about 800-1K, while this only cost me 7 dollars :D. So far it's been simple enough chatting on the forums, aim and surf the internet. But we'll see if I can actually work as things are now. If not, I'll upgrade.

EDIT: Yeah that's the other thing, I really can't judge too much as being 39 weeks pregnant kinda skews the experiment!!! But hey maybe it will help bring this sucker out!!

i don't know how you can work on a treadmill hooked to a laptop... maybe reading stuff but good luck typing anything

That’s so funny, I was thinking of doing the exact same thing.

Not too long ago, I watched a show, on the Discovery channel I believe, that spoke to a doctor who did this too. He had an office set up around his treadmill and walked like 8 hours a day and all the while he conducted his business. I really wanted to set one up after seeing that, too.

tsk tsk, multi-tasking tsk tsk...

How about taking 1 hour out of your day just to run or walk? it's much better, just to clear your mind :)

Um well:

1 hour -No work done. 300 calories burned. 1 hour of cardiovascular.

VS.

4-8 hours- 4-8 hours of of work done. 500-1K calories burned. 4-8 hours of cardiovascular health.

This is addresses the sedentary lifestyle, if you have an exercise routine in place, excellent, you can do both if you want. No one is saying you still can't take your morning outside walks too. ;)

I think the idea here is not running, but walking.

That way you can still type / work and burn calories.

but but but.... you won't develop awesome thighs walking all day turbo..
