That's awful. I remember seeing a news item introduced by Fred Roggin many years ago...

"Before we show you this next clip, we want to make sure you understand that the player did not die. Doctors have assured us he will recover."

The clip showed an ice hockey game. The camera focuses on the goalie. Three players from the other team were barreling towards the goal. They crashed into the goalie in a pile of bodies, sending the net flying.

The three players from the other team got up and moved back. The goalie was on his hands and knees. Suddenly, I saw this glut of blood hit the ice beneath his head. One of his hands snapped up to his throat.

I'm not sure if it was because of how blood spreads on ice, but it looked like a bucket of blood had been spilled underneath him. It was the most awful thing I've seen in sports (including Tyson's ear-biting escapade). I doubt they'd even show that kind of thing on network TV today.

Great intro by Roggin, by the way. The guy could be a marketer.

I hope Zednik's okay.

Man I was eating dinner and saw it live ...

Really thought I saw a man die. I have to give big kudos to the doctors and trainers as very few survive a caryatid artery being cut like that.

The goalie in that instance was Clint Malarchuk, who coincidentally was playing for Buffalo at the time. One of the trainers pinched off the artery until he was able to get stitched up. He returned to practice 4 days later and played in a game within a week.

From wikipedia about the incident: With pools of blood collecting on the ice, Malarchuk somehow left the ice under his own power with the assistance of his team's athletic trainer, Jim Pizzutelli, ATC. Many spectators were physically sickened by the sight, with nine fainting and two suffering heart attacks while three teammates vomited on the ice.

Some serious shit, glad he's going to be ok from what it looks like. Good for him for being able to rush to the bench rather than dropping to the ice and props to the doctors and the NHL for being ready for stuff like this.
