Been thinking about trying out one of the following. Apparently each concentrates on different things. I'm leaning towards Victoria II since it focuses on both economy and political strategies but the others sound interesting too.

If you're into games like that, have you ever tried Supreme Rules 2020?

umm i'm a big fan of the ANNO series they are RTS though but its VERY VERY heavily focused on economic things and there is some political too with enough military to keep you interested my vote is for anno 1404

I play Hearts of Iron and Europa Universalis. Victoria is the least interesting of the 3. Also play Darkest Hour. That one IMO is the most fun.

Are the Civilization games considered grand strategy? How do they compare? I'm wondering if I'd like some of these games. I've always liked Civ, Axis and Allies, and Risk.

HOI sounds good too but I heard it is a just a war game. Is there any political/economic strategy in it that involves taxes and stuff like that?

For HOI3 politics are huge. I can't describe it, it's so big. You have foreign relations and domestic politics. Domestic politics govern how content your people will be, how developed your industrial capacity will be, how many educated officers your army can field etc...

Then there are resources, which you need to power your industrial capacity, which in turn manufactures equipment and munitions. You can deny an enemy critical resources by invading critical provinces, Uboat blockades, strategic bombing etc etc...

It really gets complicated, but it's trivial once you master it ;)

So I bought Europa Universalis 3 with all 4 expansions. Did all the tutorials, the manuals just parroted the tutorials... I seriously cannot figure out how to do anything but look at the stats and unpause it. I managed to become Shogun some how just letting time pass. Maybe I'm retarded, but that took an hour to understand what the game is about, but no clue how to play it.

I play EU3 all the time. What're you having trouble with?

I watched someone play on Youtube a little bit.

I think my misconception had to do with the micromanagement of moving units. And also with not having done any research to add more buildings and stuff. I think I just needed to let a lot of time pass first.

But I couldn't figure out how to move my units around my own provinces and crap. After watching that kid play on Youtube, it seems like most of it is going to be done through the menu's.

Do I actually choose how to move my units, or do I just declare war and they attack or defend or what? I might just be fundamentally misunderstanding something.

Yeah, I play this game called SEO. It was updated recently and had these add-ons called Penguin and Panda that made a lot of players quit because it became so difficult.

These games look good but pretty time intensive. Also on OS X is Total War Empire/Rome, anyone played those? They look more action based than full on strategy. I want something which isn't going to take away half days of my life at a time, I'd rather just have a massive 1-2 hour battle every now and then.

Total War is good for that - although you can get sucked in for days if you're not careful.

Go check out Patrician 3. Focused on economy with a bit of politics and a few battles.
Really great yet underrated game.

FUCK RTS. I used to play mad starcraft, Ceasar II, Ceasar III, Ceasar IV, Age of Empires, Rome Total War, Shogun Total War, Command and Conquer and a few others when I was a teen.

Than, a few years ago, I picked up Starcraft 2 when it came out. FUCK THAT. I ended up playing 5-8 hours a day. After 4 months I was 12th in Diamond and I said NO MORE and haven't looked back since.

RTS == Heroin.

NEVER AGAIN.
