When I browse property websites for markets like New York, Singapore, or Hong Kong I notice that rental prices can be quite off.

I'm wondering, is this real or do people just try their luck to find an idiot online?
It looks like a decent 3-bedroom apartment that is not exactly a shithole will cost you $10k-$15k per month immediately (not even in the best areas).

If this is true,
does the average joe in such cities really make so much money that rental prices like that are normal?
or are the markets maybe bloated from all the pre-2008 credit?

This is a perfect example:
Hong Kong Property, Apartment for Rent and for Sale - Hong Kong Realty
Converted to USD, the rental is nearly $10k per month or you can buy for $4.25 mil

In Singapore, most singles are sharing apartments since most cannot afford to rent a studio. A studio in Singapore CBD area will set them back by 4k SGD at least (inclusive utilities). And the price per sq feet for Singapore property is higher than that of New York. If you make $100k SGD per year, you are not balling here. You are just surviving.

That's incredible...
You mentioned you live in Singapore in another thread, right?

Do you think it's worth it?
I mean, probably most people pay those prices because they have to live there job related. As I can work from home, I'm wondering if living there would still have advantages or if it would just be stupid to pay that?

Yes, I live here. There are pros and cons.

PROS

1) Good infrastructure.
The internet here is pretty fast (http://www.speedtest.net/result/2320193449.png). The streets and buildings are well planned and thought of. And it's clean.
2) Rule of law
The legal framework here is good for business dealings except when you're against the ruling party PAP.
3) Food
There's a lot of variety of food here. You can find a lot of good Italian, Japanese, French, Thai, Chinese restaurants here. My favorite is Japanese ramen Nantsuttei.
4) Personal safety
You can walk at 3 am and feel safe.
CONS

1) Ugly and flat-chested girls2) Boredom
The entertainments here are shopping, KTV, drinking, and eating. There's almost nothing else to do in Singapore. Oh maybe if you like gambling, then there are two big casinos here. I personally don't do gambling. Further, I don't shop (everything here is expensive). I even have to buy online from US and it still ends up cheaper compared to buying locally. I don't drink much these day since I think it's just wasting my money away.
3) No freedom of speech
The ruling party will not hesitate to sue you if you dare to speak against them. A number of oppositions have been made bankrupt by the court. Along history of Singapore, nobody ever wins in the court against PAP. Also there's a double standard. When your highness made racist remarks, there was no backlash against him. However, when some mortal did the same sin, she immediately got fired.
4) Bad weather
It's hot and humid which is a lethal combination.

5) Expensive housing
Rents are expensive as I said before.
6) Cars are expensive
In Singapore, we need to buy COE for 10-year car usage. For example, if I want to buy decent BMW, I will need to pay 85K+ for COE (COE Singapore - COE Prices in Singapore - ST701 Cars). That is not inclusive the car cost and other tax (ARF). Parking fees and car annual tax are expensive as well. Thus, most people here don't drive.

No. What the fuck for? You can get a whole house on the Mediterranean coast (or lots of other places around the world) for less than €1k a month. Why on earth would you want to be in a shoebox apartment in some Asian city for several times as much? Seems like an insane waste of money to me.

For €4k, or €10k, or whatever, you could get a mansion here, with a vast yard, pool, tennis courts, the works.

Do you have a link so that at least I can see how this kind of house looks like?

op the average joe really doesnt live in 3 bedrooms in nyc... they live somewhere else in the tri state or boroughs and they commute daily

real 3 bedrooms are pretty rare... usually 1 bedrooms converted into 3 for the low priced ones... 3500 ~

Sure thing. I'm just grabbing a few here that I like the looks of, but there are literally thousands of places to rent down here. You can get some better deals than these and these prices are negotiable. I'm in a 3 bedroom 3 bath semi detached villa, with a yard, BBQ, that's about 1500 sq feet and has a shared pool for €750 a month for example. There are plenty of nice houses all up and down the coast for less than €2k a month. Everything comes furnished here as well, which can be a good thing, or bad, depending on the people's tastes...

€2500 a month, 5 bedrooms, 3 baths, outdoor kitchen, pool, overlooking a cork forest (UNESCO site) by Marbella.

Villa for Long Term Rent in Marbella - First Choice Spain

€3595 a month, 5 beds, three baths, 5900 sq feet built, 260000 sq foot lot, pool, outdoor kitchen.

Villa for Long Term Rent in Alhaurin el grande - First Choice Spain

€3000 a month, 4080 sq feet built, 12,090 sq foot lot, pool, outdoor dining, etc.

Sotogrande Properties Villa Rental Sotogrande, Spain - RSU2024

€3000 a month, huge mature yard, 6000 sq feet built, pool, etc. etc.

Sotogrande Properties Villa Rental Lower Sotogrande, Spain - RSLW1026

I can go on an on but you only need to search for long term rentals on the Costa del Sol to find dozens and dozens of rental sites. If you see weekly prices at astronomical rates those are short term holiday rates.

That's really a difference Fatbat, but I guess you are living in the middle of nowhere?

How does living like that work? Do you need a gun to protect yourself? Can you reach a supermarket without a 10km ride?

Check out google maps for each one, seems like it is in the middle of populated area.

Just remember how much of a premium you're paying to live in a major city. So you better be enjoying it and using it to it's full advantage all the time (clubbing, museums, shopping, wtf ever). Because if you're making money online you're completely blowing that money otherwise.

I've lived on the east coast before and mostly hated it. I find the more people that are around the more they hate eachother. Go to where there's some actual space and peoples minds are more at ease and much nicer to be around. Also I don't do clubbing and all that fun city stuff so it doesn't matter to me. I'd rather look out my window and see a herd of dear than a giant parking lot (the dear come through 2x per day about 8 or so of them). I'd rather see forest or mountain than skyscrapers (although skyscrapers are cool.. but the premium!). I'd rather have fresh air than smog or even just car exhaust. I'd rather pay $600/mo for a 2800 sq ft house on a lake than WTF ever you guys are paying in singapore/NYC/etc. Midwest USA is the place to be for boring people like me who want to keep more of their money.

No question giant cities can have their perks.. but the main one is employment.. you already don't give a shit about that. So hopefully you're using enough of those other perks to justify the amt of money you're spending. Or you're just balling so hard it doesn't matter.

Ah, no, I live in Sotogrande, about 100 yards from a street full of shops, restaurants and bars. I'm about 5 minutes drive from 4 or 5 major grocery stores. A 10 minute drive to Mediamarkt (big electronics chain) and Toys r Us.

Most of the places I posted up there ^^^ are in Marbella, one of the richest areas on this coast and most popular tourist destinations. It's a well built up area with more places to eat and drink than you can imagine.

The problem I have with what you're describing is being surrounded by rednecks, hicks, neocons, tea partiers, and bible thumpers.
