People say that the solution to Penguin is to remove bad links.

I have a couple questions about that:

1. does anyone have experience with removing links and having it help their rankings?

2. What is the best program or website to find out the links that you need to remove?

3. Is there a service that will remove these links for you at an affordable rate that you would recommend?

Thanks for your help. SEO since 2000 but it ain't like it was. . .

Find a god, and pray to him/her/it and your rankings should see an instant improvement.

Good luck bro.

apparently you can hire an indian to remove them for you, but if you don't pay him the $10 he will add them again.

If you cut off your penis with a breadknife, and mail it to Matt Cutts in a Tiffany box, then document the entire thing and sent it to the Wall Street Journal, the resulting backlink juice should send your rankings sky high.

People taking SEO advice from Google is like criminals taking legal advice from the police of a tyrannical government. If Google told you to delete pages on your site, would you? Google is full of shit, they make waves by sending out dumbass notices about bad backlinks, and then all the noobs at SEOMOZ and Digital Point come here asking stupid questions like this. How can you possible gain rankings by removing links? Look at the logic in that.

This is a story about a time long ago, a time of myth and legend, when the internet was still young. Before you could friend your classmates and friends you'd rather not communicate with, before iphones, smartphone, before Google. Before the Googles were petty and cruel, and they plagued noobs with suffering and besieged them with terror. There was the internet, and it was beautiful. The great thing about the internet was you can create pages of information link it to other pages full of valuable information. The pages and sites created a vast ecosystem, almost like a web of digital gold, hence the name world wide web. The problem was that a person could not find exactly what they were looking for without already know the source to find their answer.

So the Ancients built the first indexing library with the ability to "search". No one can say with certainty when the first "search engine" became successful, but web portals like Lycos, Angelfire, Geocities, and other significant portals lead the way. Yahoo was still a child, and they too develop a way to search. Now you have to understand, the only way the internet works is because of LINKS.

I want you to re-read that very last sentence. the only way the internet, world wide web, works is because of LINKS, PERIOD. No links, then you have nothing but orphan pages, since no spider, crawler, robot can explore what they don't know doesn't exist.

Then fucking Google comes along, and does one thing that no one before them though of doing perfect, searching. They created the most popular search engine, because they indexed everything, and they only way to index, is through Links, period. It's not good enough to just have the biggest index, you need it to also get you the best results, as a visitor. Google would have completely failed, as so many have if they were giving shitting results, like Lycos and the bunch did.

Soon Everyone was Googling, and it was Good! But then Google realized something, they were so powerful, marketers were looking for ways to manipulate their results, and then the SEO Wars began, between Google and the SEOers, and the Ancients, which have been going on for years.

In all that time Google realized that the SEOers were everywhere but Ancients were not. SEOers were in every industry. And it was was impossible to defeat enemies from the shadows, so they started a propaganda department. So one day in a secret smoke filled room they created a Search Engine Roundtable of agents. They hired Rand Fishkin, Matt Cutts, and double agents you wouldn't believe to spread lies about how the internet works. The horror and beast that is Digital Point was created from the propaganda department. Randy was tasked to create a cleaned up web 2.0 versus of the Digital Point. Since the noobs were catching on. Randy created SEOMoz to spread Google'd agenda to noobs, rookies, and small business owners about how the internet works. And people believe them, for a long time, they still believe them till this day.

Some of the Ancients were mad at the propaganda department, but they realized, that as long as the noobs believed Randy, the Ancients were free to make a killing in profits for themselves. Some of the Ancients created great cities to hide and converse amongst themselves without the interference of the noobs, WickedFire was one such place. But noobs being noobs, some of them felt something was amist with SEOMOZ and DigitalPoints, so they began exploring the deep cracks of the internet, and after digging deep, the found the Golden city that was WickedFire, and they told the others and soon a flood of newbies, nubs, and noobs gathered in the Golden City.

Even then, the Ancients knew their gold was safe, since the noobs, being noobs, would not dare explore the inner knowledge, and would ask pointless meaningless questions, which having been answered thousand times, but dared not search. The ironic part of the story, is the noobs did not search the deep knowledge of WickedFire, even though, they were looking for search engine optimization advice… Noobs. Unfortunately, since the Golden City has been overflown, trash is littering the streets, and the city in general. One is to wonder though…. who was that first noob to find and enter the Golden City…. perhaps one should look to Pewep for answers to that…

Fast forward to the present the Google propaganda department was deemed a great, give great comical rhetoric amongst the staff, creating "changes" such as Panda, and Penguin to continue stirring the noob stew, and sending the noobs scrambling for their lives. Every one flinched, except the Ancients, since they were there at the beginning, and know the truth about the internet.

That truth is, the internet cannot exist without LINKS; But Google tells you to SEO your website by taking away LINKS, noob… ask yourself… Do they care for you? Look at the logic they force you to contemplate…. look in your heart, and ask yourself, Does it make sense? All your life, Google has attempted to stop you, dummied down your knowledge, hampered your ability to "make monies" online. All your life, the Ancients' scripts have told you to create more and more links. Who do you believe in the time of desperation? The Ancients with their scripts and their city of Gold or the Google and their cities of sand, such a Digital Point and SEOMoz?

But I digress, yes newbie…. delete your links, to increase you ranks! Delete your keywords to increase your traffic! delete your pages to increase your relevance! Delete your site, to increase your sales!!! Delete, Delete, Delete yourself from existent to increase your profits. For when you have nothing left, then you can receive the 100% ROi you desire. So say the Google…

No, I GET it. I've got a page that has been making money ranked #1 in insurance for a long time (5 years). I enjoyed a pretty good living. I was still up to #2 until Google made some changes to algo or something happened. I don't know what happened, but something was different. I'm not so smart but I can tell same/different.

Thanks for the messages though. I enjoyed the long one. I understand I'm new here and have not participated much. All I know for certain is that my site was making a boatload of money when I was #1. I would like to figure out how to do that again.

I'm searching for straws here. I've got an old old site with lots of SEO and history of being top dog. Now I'm way down at 30 or so. I'm sure I could dig deeper into the bowels of the wicked fire, but I have no idea where to start or who to 'talk' to or read from.

Therefore I asked here and I am delighted at the responses. Thank you. Please let me know where to go to learn how to recover from whatever happened earlier this year to my rankings. I can write articles, I can comment on places. But I have a product that people need. I want my product in front of those people when they are searching for it. I know there is no crystal ball. But somebody knows something and can help. I have a couple of VA's doing some stuff for me.

Again thanks for the responses. I hope you will continue to help steer me in the right direction.

Most businesses fail because they don't master distribution. Many people got easy organic traffic, and thus never needed to develop a working distribution model.

If your product has value, there are ways to sell it. If you're fixated on organic search only (dumb) or one kw in particular (super fucking dumb) you're screwed. If you're ready to dig into the long tail, get social, build a list, play with paid marketing, maybe you have a chance.

It is highly unlikely you're going to find answers on this forum. You need to sit down and do a serious accounting of what you know, where you are, and what the routes are to get to the next level. Until you have that understanding of your predicament, nothing anyone here has to say is going to be some magic bullet back to the top.

thanks. I know it is a long haul. I actually set up my site to target long tail keywords. I have about 8 main keywords that I was using regularly until recently. I only say until recently because about a year ago when I would outsource SOME (not all) of my SEO stuff, they would recommend I only target one keyword.

social is difficult with insurance because it is so boring. I've written more than a hundred original articles about my stuff submitted to ezinearticles.

I imagine people here are pretty ego driven. There may not be a silver bullet, but there may be someone interested in a challenge. It's the perfect set up. An older site with tons of SEO and a history of being #1. I have all the insurance licenses and everything on the customer service side all set up and ready to go (how I make money as the insurance agent and not just an affiliate).

Surely some affiliate SEO genius might want the prestige of dominating the insurance market (long tail keywords). It's not as though it is free. But if someone can demonstrate a history of success, it's worth money to both of us.

I'm sort of looking for someone to bounce ideas off of and go from there. I've got to get this thing back up somehow or I'm dead. I've done all the tricks when they were hot. I've been able to get craigslist postings to jump to the top for a few days a long time ago. I have a twitter account that has 23000 followers (I got them manually over time myself) and I don't know what to do with it. Profile links, back when tags were important and internal linking and keyword.

It is far different now with the social stuff. But that should be in addition to the attempt to get BACK to the top of the Google rankings. . . I'm still on top of yahoo and bing but get zero traffic from them. Thanks though. I just need to learn and I'll do what it takes from there.

You cannot undo Penguin. Penguin is here. You can't go back in time.

Google has fundamentally changed. They have accelerated the pace and severity of their updates.

Focusing on Google organic search as a primary channel today is very (I am being generous here) risky business.

website owners should keep the search engines at bay, by never allowing the collective search engines to give them more than 50% of a website's total traffic, which Google should account for 60% of the 50% (30% total for people that didn't pass math).

Now, you don't want to stop the search engines from sending you as much traffic as possible, so you have to balance out the equation by increasing your direct traffic and your referring traffic (which ironically will increase your search engine traffic). It is a constant seesaw game. When ever one source is responsible for more than 30% of your overall traffic, combat it by increasing traffic from other targeted sources. That way you are never at the mercy of Google, or one particular source for your business.

Hey OP,

I agree with most of feedback here that reversing penguin is pretty much close to impossible if you expecting your site going back to the good old days. On the other hand, I'm not sure about this but according to eliquid, there is a way out, however I'm afraid they ain't cheap and quick (find his thread if you wanna know).

Insurance niche is tough, no matter organic or paid traffic... you are going to find tons of competition all the way and I guess products/offers doesn't have much different makes them harder to sell if you don't have unique offer or quality traffic. But if you talking about getting fast/quality traffic, and you've banked enough while you ranked well before the updates... I think you can afford to bid those expensive keywords right? Or otherwise you might wanna think about pulling those long tails since they're much cheaper, plus converts well and this is even easier if you still keeping your previous analytics/stats/records.

And you shouldn't take it seriously and dispirited by those sharp/bold comments. You supposed to know that this is how we mingle, socializing and greet new guy here on WF. So buckled up and... you're welcome.

There is a service called Remove'em (Google It)... It's manual (unless you want to pay a lot of money to get them to remove the links) and the idea behind it is that you remove all the offending links then submit the reconsideration request to Google and 'hopefully' will be let back in.

I'm running this for a client that I took on board a couple of weeks. They were hit by Penguin so we're going to try and get the penalty lifted then working on a higher quality campaign... I'll post the update on this thread if we get back in in a few weeks... Like everyone else says though, you're likely to drop down the rankings quite dramatically...
