Stolen Cell Phone DB

It might help a little bit, but they can still be shipped outside the United States and used there.

Some groups probably ship big boxes full of stolen American cell phones to the 3rd world for resale.

LOL ofcourse! But if you live in the states you should be aware :)

I don't and we get stolen phones down here all the time.

Family member had a phone stolen during a burglary. ATT said there was usage of the phone after it was stolen but would not release the call records before a 48 hour waiting period even to the owner of the phone. Useless a-holes. Abetting the thieves it seems.

This is the laughing stock in the office right now. We (FCC) really don't give a fuck if your cell phone gets stolen. In other news, anybody doing mobile better be ready to be raped.

I've always known about IMEI changing to circumvent bans but I've always wondered where they get new the IMEI from? Surely phone companies have a DB of all IMEI's for all devices and when an unknown/duplicate IMEI tries to connect to the network it just won't work?

I wouldn't have thought that phone manufacturers keep the networks updated every time they do a new "run" of phones, and even if they did you could just use the IMEI from a cheap legitimate handset and then it would be in the approved database...

You're not in any database until you report your phone stolen, then it puts your IMEI in the database with a little note that says "STOLEN. DO NOT ACTIVATE." I doubt all your information is anywhere in that database. Regardless all your information (including your social security number and the phone you purchased) is in the phone companies database anyway. So it's not like they've got any new information on you.
