More specifically the US military, how would you rate your overall experience?

What parts were awesome?

Camaraderie, cool training, great friends, partying, some of but definitely not all of the traveling.

There's plenty of shitty times too, trust me. But they just serve to shape the experience.

If it were easy, everyone would do it. Well, the Air Force is easy so there's an option if you want the "best" of both worlds I guess. But at the end of the day, you're in the Air Force so...yeah.

Why are you asking? Are you thinking of enlisting/getting a commission? Because if you are, no one on this forum is likely to be a great barometer for what you may/may not end up doing. There are plenty of other forums for that.

BTW, I don't get into political discussions so any fucking neckbeard faggot keyboard jockeys that want to start bitching and moaning about Bush/wars/oil/whatever target your comments elsewhere.

I've never served myself. I do have a few close friends who have.

Either they completely embraced the lifestyle (and are still serving today as a career) or they absolutely hated it and counted down the days until their service was over. One friend of mine was even completely lied to by his recruiter and ended up hating his life for the next 4 years (and trust me, he called me every chance he had to bitch about his life lol).

When I was younger, I looked into joining the Navy. But, after weighing the pros and cons, I decided against it. It just didn't seem like something I really wanted to do when it came time to sign that paper.

Thanks for protecting us from the evil people in the Middle East who want to attack us because they are jealous of our "freedom".

even though i am pretty sure you just wanted to say something about the limited freedoms we have in the west, you should know that (some) people in the middle east want to destroy the US as it is not because of any jealousy issues but because their god directly told them to do so.

of course it is not everyone, maybe not even a majority of people, however there are plenty of people who want the downfall of the US simply because of it being a "dhimmi" (non muslim) empire.

So what is their reason to not want to destroy countries like Australia, Switzerland, Canada ? My guess would be because these countries do not attack the middle east or meddle in their business. But that would just be a guess on my part.

I like the part where he actually got paid to go there but thinks someone owes his fucking queer ass a thank you. In reality, you owe us a thank you for paying for your ass to go there and "PROTECT MERICA".

My screen name = My day job.
Sometimes it rocks, sometimes it sucks. It does suck a whole LOT less in the AF though ;)
Can't say it's for everyone, hell - can't even say it's for me every day but it's a job.

I'm getting paid to see the world (Japan at the moment) - doesn't get much better than that, however I did 365 days in the Desert to "earn" this assignment - they get more than they give most of the time.

Where else would you do this?

My best friends in Washington State had all joined the services in the early 90s, with one in the 101st Airborne. They were the closest unit to Baghdad in the 1st Persian Gulf war. He mostly hated it though and came out a completely different person.

What makes you think they don't want to destroy (or occupy/take over) those countries too? Both Canada and Australia have had boots on the ground in Afghanistan with 157 Canadians killed and 32 Aussies killed. Both countries have had commanders leading the ISAF coalition at one point. Both have been involved in major combat operations. 2 Canadians have held back to back long distance sniping records there and were awarded Bronze Stars by the US Army for their efforts.
