I am "severely" vitamin D deficient...

Requested the doctor do a blood test and check everything including vitamin D... everything was fine except for vitamin D.

Okay for everyone who doesn't know, basically vitamin D is produced in your skin upon exposure to UV light (the sun). If you don't get a lot of sun, or you avoid the sun due to a lifetime of government campaigns about the danger of skin cancer and the merits of wearing a hat, covering up and wearing sunscreen all the time, chances are you are below normal.

I was told the reference range is 60-160 nmol\L (the USA uses a different unit), my level is less than 20. The doc has told me to start taking vit D supplements. It will be interesting to see how much I improve once I get it back to normal, because I generally feel like shit every day with a sore neck, the feeling that I need a massage really badly, general lack of motivation, creaky knees and a variety of non-specific symptoms that are all apparently linked to vitamin D deficiency. Osteomalacia is the main thing that happens in deficient people, it is the softening of your bones, not really going to notice this, it just happens without you knowing. If I was slightly below normal it would be a different story, but mine is dangerously low... so I am expecting major improvements over the next few months.

So for all you geeks who sit inside playing around with your computation machines all day, go get yourself checked... the future is not bright for people with long term vitamin D deficiency. Since I live in Australia I didn't have to pay for the doctor visits or the blood tests, but you Americans probably have to... it's worth it.

Get some sun for 20-30 minutes a day, and if you can't find the time to do that take a vitamin D supplement. While you're at it, a daily multivitamin and fish oil are also good investments.

I take multivitamin's, fish oil capsules, zinc every day. Why don't you? You should realise that if your work requires a lot of sitting down and not a lot of movement, you have to go out of your way to stay healthy

for some reason i read the whole post from the OP. Not affected by ADHD in this thread or else i always skim through the posts.

+rep for good paragraph structure + catchy title

I just had the same results when I got a physical. Started taking a supp but I'm a stoner and stopped taking it for some reason. I'm sure this post will get me taking it again for another weeks so...+rep!

The BEST method is to take D AND get some sun every day. Like 15 minutes a day increases the absorption of D by some ridiculous percent. Its really not difficult to get 15 mins of fresh air a day.

Sun will NOT fix a deficiency however

I take 2000 units daily and feel much much better

It's hard to get sun every day when it's pouring rain... we don't all live in tropical paradises. I tried to get some sun today, the most I could manage was about 5 minutes before the black clouds rolled in... not very consistent is it? supps are definitely the way to go until summer at least.

How do you know your supplemental intake of Vitamin D is adequate?
Just take a shitload of it. Whatever you don't use you'll just shit out. It's only harmful if you consume the whole bottle in a day or something. Or if you trust what's on the bottle you can take as many as what's recommended and a bit more (if you get little to no sunlight like me). Catalyn by Standard Process is a great option. I take 5 tablets per day. 3 tablets = 80% recommended daily amount of Vitamin D. It also has a lot more vitamins in it too.

Orange Triad is a good f'ing multivitamin. It has everything you ever need in it, and more.

Also play tennis outside in the sun about 8-10 hours a week. Plenty of Vitamin D here.

Unfortunately I'm blond hair blue eyed and fair skin and I'm sure I'll get skin cancer soon.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

The one thing I'll say, based on A LOT of research, is that sitting down at a computer for 6-10 hours a day is one of the worst things in the world for your body. Recent studies are suggesting that in terms of your overall long-term health it's as bad as smoking and other crazy things you wouldn't expect.

Just gonna hustle for another 1-2 years and call it quits ... some things ARE more important than money.
