I have some free time on my hands and i want to give something a shot. I have a hosting account and a couple of sites that i am working on. As a n00b i dont think i will get in to any of the affiliate networks because i am not generating traffic. My plan was to launch sites until i had a respectable combined amount of traffic, then approch the aff networks to sell stuff. I can't wait!! Is there anything that i can try that might give me faster results? I can do basic, quality sites. My budget is small... I'm not asking for a free ride here... just a solid, low risk idea from somebody with experience so i can find out for myself. There is so much information out there i don't know where to start.
Thanks.
Please don't flame me.

You are wrong. Put a simple website up, preferably for an LLC that you've registered. Have this be the site you submit to the networks. The day after you send in your application, call them and explain your situation. Be honest about how much of a newb you are, but do enough homework to sound like you know what you're talking about.

This worked for me. Before I had run any respectable traffic at all I had membership in 5 networks. Probably the most important thing if you want your applications to go through easily is register for an LLC and get a Federal Tax ID (and answer your goddamn phone when they call, of course). This shows you mean business (literally).

I am in the UK so i presume The tax ID would be a VAT registration number. So you think i should set up an actual business?? I suppouse that makes sense, thanks. I am assuming that each network has it's own terms for how you can use your links. I was thinking of setting stuff up on facebook and promoting offers. Does that sound possible/like a good idea?? I could tie it in with landing pages etc...

^ The cash you spend registering a LLC is better spent towards your campaigns if you're starting out.

Just call them, tell them you found out about them through Wickedfire. Try it now. If they don't let you in ask them why - then come back to this thread so we can figure out wassup.

OK well i really would but it's 2.00 in the morning here!! I am going to go with UK networks to start with. But im on it first thing!! I'll use this time to find some networks to ring.
Is it worth investing in a wordtracker subscription?

Im scared!! lol, i will have to do a bit more research and find a balance between trustworty/big name and those that will let me in!! I suppouse i can introduce myself as a web developer and say that i heard about them on here and i am looking to get in to this arena. Be honest right?? I can show them sites that i've built but they are all private with no ad's.

Ok, so ive made a few calls and i am suprised to say that the bigger networks seem keen to let me join even though i am not generating a significant amount of traffic.
CJ said: You need your own websites, there is no minimum traffic. Sign up on the site.

Trade doubler (The actual number you need is matt on 0845 894 5128) said: The same, they use banners AND links to promote. They do not let you use facebook at the moment but they are in talks with clients. It is because you cannot easily control the content that is near the ads. I mention this because one plan was to promote links via facebook.

OMG said the same again but theyu deal with amainly finance and insurance related sites and advertisers.

Out of interest, what goes with CJ and trade doubler?? I mean what are you allowed to do??

That is as far as i got before i was booted off the phone!! I will sign up to CJ and trade doubler and take it from there.

juntao65 - i think i am going to need to build some more sites after all!!
i will try and ring the others when i get chance. Thanks for getting me started!!

Right, i now have a CJ account aswell. I am happy to stick with these two for now because i knwo they are well known and respected. That was easier than i thought!! So i guess the rest is up to me!!! Can anybody give me a few pointers?? I think i am going to try a two pronged approach. One is to build traffic up on my sites and display the banners. Two is to build landing pages around the offers and build up word on facebook etc... Not directly advertising from facebook... Does that sound reasonable for a n00b??? Any info much appreciated at this point!!

Bear in mind that while UK networks like to consider themselves miles ahead of the US networks they are, IMO, miles behind.

They don't tend to do CPA offers (only branded), you don't typically get an affiliate manager (you're left to fend for yourself), they are normally hard to contact, they are inexperienced with regards to the affiliate traffic sources (anything that isnt SEO or PPC traffic and they havent got a clue), they typically only pay net 30 and dont offer weeklies/dailies with volume at all and they dont absorb risk at all (even if you do EVERYTHING by the book if the merchant doesn't pay the network they won't pay you).

Ok well thanks for the tip. I have gone with the two that i consider to be the most well know to minimise the risk. What does 'Locking Period - Standard Actions lock on the 10th of the month, unless extended. ' (CJ) Mean?? I have applied to my firt two advertisers so fingers crossed!!!
