No one will stop you from submitting the same article to a million directories. However, if you get hit with the duplicate content slap, it will harm you. If you don't feel like rewriting the same article for each directory, at least write unique articles for the popular ones (i.e. eza).
Many article directories are too weak to pass good link juice but spinning does help with indexation rates I think. There is a limit to the number of similar articles Google will index, everything else goes into supplementary.
Sub unique articles to the top 5-10 directories and spun versions to the thousands of lesser directories out there. AMR will help a lot with that.

AMR has a shit problem for the past 2 months now and has upgraded 6 times since then. The live links has gone down to 20% instead of a hundred. Damn This sucks think I'll develop a software of my own with the idea of AMR and use it for myself

After all the manual submission get a software or develop one. AMR used to be my answer here but not anymore as the software sucks at the moment.

- Spin you article via software(synonym spin) then Mass Submit to 4000-5000 article directories you can find. Use Scrapebox to get the directories.
- Wait for 4 days then this will have at least 1k - 2k approved links.
Just the manual submission will give you a great juice combined with a mass submit damn your article will get every penny out of it.

Last step which under my perspective most article marketers and backlink builders are missing out.
- Create an RSS feeds on all approved links (5-20 links = 1 RSS feed) DO NOT overdo it with 100 links = 1 RSS feed as it will just be ignored by google (in my experience). 2k+ links in 5-20 RSS is so damn hard to create so don't get nasty and shitty to do manual creation here.
Work hard "the smart way". Get a software to build RSS you faggot, it's free.
- Then Ping them for 5 days until they get crawled/spidered which will give you the maximum Link juice you can get and maximizing the chances of getting 80% of the links indexed.

Yes you are right Article alley is a no follow site. Also it does not accept articles that are posted elsewhere that's why it's first in the list.
But here's the thing. Article Alley give the highest PR to your article compared to other sites. Also it gives real traffic though Ezine is much better in this part. Also I'm using article alley if I target an easy keyword. It easily goes up to Search engine Rankings while my site is still moving the shit snail walk to reach the top position. Article Alley jumps to the top spot claiming the traffic for my site.
Over all It gives you great contribution. In article marketing you must not focus alone on one distribution site. You must take a look at all the other options to maximize everything out of your article. For me I don't care if it is No follow or Do follow as long as it gives you contribution in your effort on article marketing then I'm good with it.
The shit of them all is a No follow site full of spun articles and gives you no traffic at all but that's not article alley:arcadefreak:
believe me, Mr Big Google does not like duplicate content,mate. Google hate to see content in a site that is being stolen from other sites. And penalizes the sites externally for doing such thing. On the other hand, internal duplication is also bad, but you are not penalized as bad as sites with stolen content

uhmmm if you read the whole post then you would know that it is not stolen content because YOU wrote it..There is a number of shit that google indexes for the same article but you'll get penalized in 5 of the same articles posted in the web? oh really? I got all 5 indexed on the same keyword brah like some samples?
Spinning is okay, but writing a new article for each site is best. Unique content will get indexed by Google better. Good luck!
i tend to write unique articles for content on my own site, and spin those articles for submission to the directories. altho, i agree with the comment about some directories being more important, especially eza - make sure eza articles are well written in good english and are unique or they wont accept them.
the average wordpress site i build has about 7 categories (including the main keyword category), so i will write (or get someone to write) one article for each category, then rewrite those 7 articles for submission to eza, then spin those for all the other directories - job done.

Spinning articles will not harm you, as someone said above, unless those spun articles are also on your website. But if all your spun articles are only on the directories, then who cares about duplicate content. They will take the hit, not you. The Internet is all about duplicate content anyway - thats how a breaking news story gets syndicated all over the presses. However, if you want the most bang for your efforts in terms of SEO, then unique content pointing back to your own website is always the better bet.
EZA is no longer as important as it once was even with unique articles. I think they had too many ads all over your articles. So you must find better sources for your articles. Try specialized article sources rather than general directories, although some are still good to use. I think Scribd still gets good traffic and has increased in importance.

Try to do it on word, sentence and paragraph level and then re-check every article with your proof reader/editor and then post them to the article directories. You'll see magic results. Yeah in theory, but in reality noone is going to put THAT kind of effort or money into articles for mass links.
