I really want to learn it so I can make my own landing pages. Would you guys suggest I take a college web design course or is it something I can learn on my own? How did some of you guys learn?

No college, no way. Waste of time and money.

There are a ton of online tutorials, and one of the best ways is to learn by example doing as many as you can. This is what I did when I started using PS probably like 10 years ago.

But these days, there are better uses of time than random tutorials. I don't know all of the training programs out there, but Lynda.com is one of them, and one of the best out there.

You can take the Lynda.com DVD training and get it done in less than a week and be pretty bad ass with photoshop.

in just 5 short weeks, you too can be making shitty photo shop nugs!

There are quite literally tens of thousands of Photoshop tutorials online. This site has some interesting links to other tutorials...

Additionally there are hundreds if not thousands of great Photoshop books.

Amazon.com: Layers: The Complete Guide to Photoshop's Most Powerful Feature (9780321534163): Matt Kloskowski: Books

Amazon.com: Photoshop CS4 Down & Dirty Tricks (9780321563170): Scott Kelby: Books

I might consider photoshop AND web design as a subject worth investigating.

Is there anything barman can't do on the internet?

I have a full (everything) account on Lynda.com and I highly recommend it. It helps you learn the basics and tools of Photoshop. This is important but I still read tutorials from time to time to help learn actual techniques.

From what I've watched on Lynda, they teach you how to use it but not really create with it.

That's really weird that I downloaded the PS 7 trial tonight and then came across this thread. Bully for me, though, with all the links.

Plus I think that is the longest post I've ever seen out of Barman.

This thread delivers.

I opened Photoshop and started making shit. Once you know the tools it's pretty straight forward.
this. i've been using photoshop professionally for about 10 years and have never really read a book about it, except for sections of books on stuff like channels/paths/selections. followed a few tutorials for specific techniques here and there.

Learn the basics and then take tutorials like Lynda.com's stuff which is very good. Find designs on the internet and figure out how to replicate them. Play around with stuff like different colors, styles/blending modes, selections, etc. Just test and play around with it and keep improving on what you make. I have Photoshop open probably every day, and I use it for everything graphics related.

I talked to a 23 yr old last weekend who spend 40g on a 18 month web design degree program and his Photoshop skills were minimal to say the least. I seen better work in paint. This guy didnt even know what CSS was.

It's a shame that colleges are allowed to teach Photoshop and Web Design. Is it the colleges fault for passing this dumbass? or can you just pin the blame on the student for half assing his way through something he knows obviously nothing about.

IMO, this is a total waste of time to take a course on it. Like previous people said, just open up Photoshop and start clicking.
